. . . We were led outside the White House press lobby into the Rose Garden, and, as spokesman, I was pushed to the front of a bunch of TV cameras. There was a semi-circle of microphones on stands, and then one of the clamoring reporters stepped right in front and pushed a big mike with a foam cover in my face, saying “Dan Rather, CBS News.” And I was on!
